What is RollSpawn?
RollSpawn is a mobile app that randomly generates complete, rules-legal characters for fifth-edition fantasy roleplaying games. Every step - species, class, abilities, spells - is decided by an actual 3D die roll. The app is designed to turn the blank-page problem into a short, fun experience.
Which rules does it use?
RollSpawn uses content from the System Reference Document (SRD) 5.2, which is released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. It covers the core mechanics and a curated set of species, classes, subclasses, backgrounds, feats, and spells compatible with the fifth edition ruleset.
The MVP supports character levels 1 through 5. Higher levels are on our post-launch roadmap.
Is it free?
Yes. The core RollSpawn experience - rolling characters, viewing them, exporting to text or JSON - is free and does not contain advertisements. A one-time $4.99 in-app purchase unlocks premium features (see below). No subscription, no recurring charges.
What does Premium unlock?
Premium is a one-time $4.99 purchase that unlocks:
- Unlimited character vault slots (free tier has a limited save slot count).
- Favorites filtering in the vault.
- PDF character-sheet export (text and JSON exports are free).
- Character Comparison mode - side-by-side stat and feature comparison.
- Stats & Roll History screen for vault analytics.
The purchase is tied to your Apple ID or Google account and can be restored on any device signed into the same store account.
How do I restore a previous purchase?
Open Settings inside the app and tap "Restore Purchases". Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID or Google account you used for the original purchase. If the restore does not complete, verify your device has an active internet connection, then contact us.
The dice won't roll / the app crashes. What should I do?
First, try closing the app fully and reopening it. If the issue persists:
- Make sure your device software is up to date (iOS 16 or later / Android 10 or later).
- Restart your device.
- If the problem still occurs, email us with your device model, OS version, and a short description of what you were doing when the crash happened. Screenshots or screen recordings help us diagnose faster.
Can I bring my character to a different VTT or app?
The PDF export produces a printable character sheet formatted for fifth-edition play. The JSON export contains a structured data dump of every field. A dedicated VTT-compatible JSON schema (Foundry, Roll20, etc.) is on our post-launch roadmap.
Is my data private?
Yes. RollSpawn is local-first - characters and settings are stored on your device only. We do not run a backend server, do not have an account system, and do not collect behavioral analytics. Read the full Privacy Policy for details.
Accessibility features
RollSpawn supports system-level Dynamic Type and screen readers on iOS and Android. The app follows a dark theme by default; system contrast settings are respected. Sound effects and haptic feedback can be disabled independently in Settings. If you hit an accessibility blocker, please email us - we take these reports seriously.
What's next for RollSpawn?
Our post-launch roadmap includes character levels 6 through 20, a VTT-compatible JSON export, a party generator (roll four characters at once), themed constraint packs, 3D character miniatures, and multiclass support. We prioritize based on community feedback - tell us what you want most.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds for in-app purchases are handled by Apple and Google directly, per their store policies. See Apple's refund request page or Google's refund policy. If you think there was a technical issue with your purchase, email us first - we may be able to resolve it faster than going through the store.
Bug reports and feedback
The most helpful bug reports include:
- Your device model and OS version (e.g., "iPhone 15, iOS 17.3").
- The RollSpawn version (shown at the bottom of the Settings screen).
- A short description of what you expected to happen and what actually happened.
- Screenshots or a short screen recording, if relevant.
